![]() ![]() The FastConnect 7800 subsystem supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio, and Qualcomm's new XPAN technology that lets earbuds connect over Wi-Fi, for better sound quality and/or extended range. It also supports gaming at up to 240 Hz, and upscaling to 8K on external displays. The chip is also the first in mobile to support ray-tracing with Global Illumination in Unreal Engine 5.2. On the GPU side, the company claims 25% better performance and 25% better power efficiency. Qualcomm has switched to a 1-5-2 arrangement of the CPU cores, with the prime core running at 3.3 GHz and five "performance" cores running at 3.2 GHz. The Kryo CPU cores feature 30% better performance and 20% better power efficiency compared to last year's chip. The upgraded AI capabilities enable features such as Photo Expansion ("zooming out" on an existing photo using generative AI) and Video Object Eraser. In the upgraded Sensing Hub, always-on AI performance has been improved up to 3.5x, and there are now dual ISPs, enabling always-on AI using both front and rear cameras. The Hexagon NPU AI cores are 98% faster than last year's. Snapchat has already announced plans to use this feature. The 8 Gen 3 can generate images via stable diffusion in under one second, many times faster than before. The chip also supports multi-modal generative AI, supporting both input and output via voice, text, and photo. The ability to run such cutting-edge AI entirely on-device, enhancing privacy, is a first. Google has only recently announced such a service - Google Assistant with Bard - albeit as an "early experiment" and presumably cloud-based. One key new feature is the ability to run a generative AI large language model (LLM) (specifically, Meta's Llama 2) and integrate it with a voice assistant, all on-device. Unsurprisingly, AI is the emphasis among the new features and performance gains. Qualcomm has taken the wraps off its new flagship chip for phones: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Can Run Generative AI Voice Assistant On-Device Finally, the S7 platforms support Bluetooth 5.4 including LE Audio and Auracast. The new 4th-generation ANC (active noise cancellation) now helps cancel out others' voices in addition to background noise, such as in a busy office environment. They also have 6x the compute performance, a 3x more powerful DSP (digital signal processor), and 3x the memory. They're significantly more powerful than previous chips, with an onboard micro-NPU for AI that's 100x more powerful. The S7 platforms also introduce Hearing Loss Compensation. XPAN employs "micro-power Wi-Fi" for battery life that's on par with using a Bluetooth connection. XPAN supports up to 192 kHz multi-channel lossless music. XPAN lets earbuds connect to a phone or other device over a Wi-Fi network, offering significantly higher-quality sound and longer range. They have many significant upgrades over the existing (lower-end) S3 and S5 platforms, but chief among them is Qualcomm eXpanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology. Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon Sound S7 and S7 Pro Gen 1 platforms, chipsets designed to power the next generation of high-end Bluetooth earbuds, headphones, and speakers. In a separate announcement, Qualcomm today announced the first mobile chip capable of running an AI voice assistant powered by a LLM on-device. Motorola's other new AI features include Text Summarization, an AI-assisted document scanner, and a personal assistant that runs a large language models (LLMs) on-device and continuously learns, to provide better, more personalized answers with greater privacy. The company is also working on new AI software, including Privacy Content Obfuscation, which uses AI to automatically identify and blur profile pictures and names in outbound social media posts, protecting privacy. The software adjusts to offer a full-screen Android interface, part-screen full Android interface, or smartwatch mode. ![]() The phone can also be bent in specific places to make it stand up at an angle on a tabletop. Rather than a fixed hinge, the whole center of the phone is flexible, allowing it to be worn around the wrist.
